There’s been intense debate over the decisions Apple has recently taken that impose restrictions on third-party developers for Apple devices. Namely, the discussions between Apple and Adobe over Flash support have become the most popular.
Read Steve Jobs’ thoughts on Flash. And how Adobe plans on moving forward.
In a similar vein, implementation of HTML5 and how video will be handled is also a hot topic. Apple and, recently, Microsoft have announced support for H.264 while Mozilla and Opera have been pushing for the Ogg Theora standard. Even more interesting is that Google is rumoured to announce support for a technology they acquired and plan to make open source, On2 VP8, in mid-May. In all of this, one wonders how HTML5 video will affect the Flash market on the web (currently, Google-owned YouTube is testing HTML5 support for their videos as an alternative to Flash).
It’s apparent that internet technologies will continue to affect our daily lives in the future more than ever as we integrate them within our daily lives, so recognizing how they are implemented and by whom is especially important. Granted, Flash and HTML5 might seem trivial things in the larger scope of the web to some, but the decisions being made today by these companies will affect how the general public makes use of them tomorrow.
With all of this fighting over the way we interact with the web and internet technology by large companies, do YOU feel you should have more of a say? What are your thoughts/concerns?
